Empowering refugee teachers through recognition: A sustainable response to teacher shortages in crisis-affected contexts

On 4 March, the Teacher Task Force will take part in the webinar “Empowering refugee teachers through recognition: A sustainable response to teacher shortages in crisis-affected contexts.” Organized by UNESCO and partners, the session will bring together ministries of education, recognition authorities, teacher councils, development partners and refugee teachers themselves to discuss practical solutions to teacher shortages. The Teacher Task Force Secretariat will contribute to the discussion, emphasizing the importance of inclusive teacher policies that recognize the qualifications, experience and professional rights of refugee educators.

With an estimated 44 million teachers needed globally by 2030, shortages are most acute in crisis-affected and refugee-hosting contexts. At the same time, many qualified refugee teachers face legal and administrative barriers that prevent them from working as recognized professionals, leaving both refugee and host-community learners without access to experienced educators.

This webinar will explore sustainable policy solutions for addressing the teacher shortage, including scaling up recognition tools within regulated professional spaces, while also examining the gap between recognition of prior learning and the licensing of teaching professionals.

Through its participation, the Teacher Task Force will continue to advocate for policies that value, support and integrate refugee teachers as part of national teaching workforces.
