ASEAN Regional Forum on the Future of Education

The COVID-19 pandemic brought forth educational transformation overnight, resulting in increased digitalization and the rise of online and hybrid learning. It also brought on challenges such as inequity in access to education and learning loss.

The “Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Forum on the Future of Education” will be convened on 24-26 May 2023, via video conference, to discuss inclusive recovery from the challenges brought on by the pandemic and explore steps to invest in the future of education. The ASEAN Secretariat will host the forum virtually, as it will shape the Future of Education Flagship Reports and Policy Briefs, which will include future-oriented insights, recommendations, and pathways for the transformation of education toward attaining ASEAN Education 2050.

The ASEAN Regional Forum on the Future of Education” will discuss 3 thematic areas: 

  • Transforming Education Agendas: Building the Future We Want
  • Teacher Development: Innovations and Best Practices for the Future of Education and Beyond
  • Inclusive ASEAN 2050: Building Equitable Societies and Learning Cities

On 25th May, the session entitled "THE FUTURE OF TEACHING AND LEARNING" will be led by the Teacher Development Chief of Section and the Head of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 Secretariat M. Carlos Vargas, as he will present the impacts of the developments in the educational technologies brought about by the 4th industrial revolution on the future of education in the region. Teacher education experts on ICT will be invited to define the connection between learning, teaching, new education goals, and employability.

The conference will provide a venue for bridging the seemingly perennial gap between research, policy, and practice. In bringing together educational sector experts and institutions, the conference will mobilize knowledge and provide visibility to national and regional expertise. It welcomes recent data-driven research and best practice, which addresses current national and regional challenges and provides prospective solutions.

AFTRA conference | Launch of the new UNESCO and TTF report

The Africa Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA) organizes the 10th International Conference & 12th Roundtable which will be hosted by the Ministry of Education, Art and Culture, Republic of Namibia, and Namibia National Teachers Union (NANTU).

During the Ministerial Session on May 9, the 'Supporting teachers through policy development – lessons from sub-Saharan Africawill be launched. Based on the experiences of nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the new report by UNESCO and the Teacher Task Force provides an overview on the use of the Teacher Policy Development Guide to develop teacher policies, to improve the effective organization and management of the teacher workforce to ensure countries can deliver on the promise of quality education.

The session will also illustrate that teachers should be at the core of teacher policy development based on a collaborative framework, including the important role of social dialogue. It will also provide a number of key findings and recommendations for national governments and development partners to consider in current and future teacher policy development efforts.

The Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Distinguished Academic Performance is organizing a global forum, which will take place at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library. The event will bring together a group of experts from leading international educational institutions who will discuss various topics throughout the day, including global initiatives to support teachers’ innovation, global talent mentoring, and many other related topics.

The second panel discussion on Global Initiatives to Support Teachers Innovation will feature presentations of laureates of the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development and the UNESCO Chief of Section for Teacher Development.

The forum will be a hybrid event, allowing the audience from outside the UAE to join the sessions remotely. Interpretation services will also be available from English to Arabic and Arabic to English.

Zambia - National stakeholders meeting on the institutionalisation of social dialogue for teachers and the development of a comprehensive teacher policy

The purpose of this in-person national meeting is to create awareness about the teacher policy framework developed with UNESCO and IICBA’s support through the Capacity Development for Education Programme (CapED), foster national ownership, ensure sustainability in implementation, and to engage stakeholders in the key issues and the roadmap for the development of the comprehensive teacher policy in Zambia.

As part of the meeting organized by the Teacher Council of Zambia with CapED’s support, the Teacher Task Force will present its Teacher Policy Development Guide - a key reference designed to assist national decision-makers and education officials to develop evidence-informed national teacher policies as integrated components of national education sector plans or policies, aligned to national development plans and strategies.

The following are the specific objectives of this joint meeting:

  1. to launch and disseminate the developed national framework for social dialogue for teachers in Zambia
  2. to discuss the importance of social dialogues towards improving the status of the teaching profession, teacher quality, teaching and learning in line with the new education 2030 agenda, CESA (2016-20) and ILO recommendations (1966/1997);
  3. to identify mechanisms for scaling up the institutionalizing social dialogues for teachers in the education sector
  4. to identify and discuss key issues affecting the teaching profession in the Zambian education sector
  5. to develop a clear roadmap for developing a comprehensive teacher policy to guide the Ministry of Education in attracting, developing, managing and retaining effective and quality teachers for improved education service delivery

Harnessing a global network for the ECCE workforce development - Side event at the World Conference on Early Childhood Education and Care

Since 2017, the Teacher Task Force thematic working group on ECCE Teachers and Facilitators has brought together partners, experts and country representatives with a particular interest in developing the ECCE workforce.

The World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education represents a unique opportunity for the thematic group to meet and bring together members and non-members to strategize on key areas of work for the forthcoming biennium, agree upon key advocacy themes and actions in light of deliberations coming out of the Conference to promote the ECCE workforce at the national, regional and global level.

The event aims to be an interactive discussion between those present, which will include the members and non-members of the TTF thematic group on the ECCE workforce.
