Distance learning and teacher training strategies. Lessons from the Caribbean

This report describes the Distance Learning and Teacher Training Strategies in the Caribbean SIDS (Small Island Developing States) programme, which was launched in 2021 in response to the urgent demand among teachers in the region for training in basic computer skills and digital literacy. The teaching corps in the Latin America and Caribbean region, notably in the SIDS, faced tremendous challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and this training sought to develop teachers' ICT, digital or pedagogic skills, specifically with a view to applying innovative teaching methods or adaptive pedagogies in remote, hybrid or blended classrooms. The report presents the approach and methodology and puts particular emphasis on the lessons learnt, which will be essential for the success of future projects following the same training model in other countries.

The project was launched by UNESCO’s Global Education Coalition, in collaboration with Blackboard and the Caribbean Centre for Educational Planning (CCEP) at the University of the West Indies, with the financial support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and local support for Jamaica from UNICEF Jamaica.
