Transforming Education Summit – Call for best practices and innovations on teachers and teaching

The online submission form for the collection of good practices to support the work of the Transforming Education Action Tracks is now available. The deadline for the first round of submissions is 20 May 2022, however subsequent rounds of submissions will be available.

The Transforming Education Summit (TES) in September 2022 provides a unique platform and opportunity to reimagine education for the 21st century and to mobilize greater political ambition, actions, and solidarity towards achieving SDG 4. The TES Thematic Action Tracks, in particular, spotlight areas requiring greater stakeholder attention and actions and can accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda and/or transform education.

While the national consultations workstream supports the development of a shared vision of the futures of education, the good practices collected through the Action Tracks workstream will identify evidence-based examples of successful policy interventions and programmes, including those addressing COVID-19 pandemic-related educational disruption as well as pre-existing educational equalities learning crisis, with a view to drawing lessons learnt and key drivers for transformation. Their value lies in communicating elements of already transformed education landscapes to decision-makers. Practical solutions that work in different contexts will be brought into the spotlight, particularly programming and financing approaches with transformative results for marginalized groups, along with evidence on how these might be taken to scale. It is hoped that such efforts will inspire the reapplication of experiences across countries

This form is being used to seek good practices in the area of Teachers, teaching, and the teaching profession, which is the theme of Action Track 2 of the TES. The Action Track will explore the particular issues of teacher shortages, qualifications, and emerging professional development needs, status and working conditions of teachers and education personnel, educational leadership, and innovation.

Launch of the World Bank’s Making Teacher Policy Work report

Join us for the launch of the World Bank’s Making Teacher Policy Work report.

The report explores why, despite the growing evidence on effective teacher policies, we still do not observe high-quality teaching and learning in action in every classroom.

The report argues that we need to go beyond the theory of what works in teacher policy to how to support teachers in different contexts to adopt what works, while making sure it is implementable at scale and can be sustained over time.

This event will kick off by introducing the key messages from Making Teacher Policy Work. Following this, a panel including policymakers, teachers, and researchers from around the world will discuss the importance of putting teachers at the center of education policymaking and to share challenges, opportunities, and promising innovations in teacher policy.

We will explore new perspectives on questions such as: Why do pay for performance programs often fail to improve student learning? How can policymakers address global teacher shortages? How can teacher professional development most effectively support teachers to adopt new practices, including the use of technology, to improve their lessons?

2023 World Teachers' Day: The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage

With the theme "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage", the 2023 celebrations will aim to put the importance of stopping the decline in the number of teachers and then starting to increase that number at the top of the global agenda. Through various activities, it will advocate for a dignified and valued teaching profession, analyse their challenges, and showcase inspiring practices to attract, retain and motivate teachers and educators. It will also examine the ways in which education systems, societies, communities, and families recognise, appreciate, and actively support teachers.

World Teachers’ Day is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International (EI).

The events on 5 October will be hybrid (both in person at the UNESCO Headquarters 7, place Fontenoy, 75007 Paris, France and online) and events on 6 October will be online only.

Recognition and appreciation: the role of teacher prizes in enhancing the status of the profession

All over the world, we find a wide variety of prizes aimed at rewarding outstanding practices in the teaching profession, ranging from schools to adult and higher education, and covering different fields of study. There are international, regional and national prizes, such as the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development, the Global Teacher Prize, the African Union Continental Teacher Prize, the European Innovative Teaching Award, and many National Teacher Prizes. This panel aims to discuss the role of teacher prizes as symbols of recognition of the work undertaken by educators, as an essential form of contribution to the improvement of their status within the community and, ultimately, as a lever to raising the appeal of the profession. 

 

2023 World Teachers’ Day Opening Ceremony

After opening remarks of the co-conveners of World Teachers’ Day, the event will present critical data on the appeal of the teaching profession, highlighting teacher voices on what they find attractive and challenging in the profession. An open conversation will be organized with the co-conveners, decision-makers, and experts from the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession, who will present what they see as the priority actions needed to make the profession more appealing in the years ahead. 

 

Teacher education in emergencies to support attraction and well-being

A two-hour roundtable convened by the Global Education Coalition (GEC) with the support of UNHCR, the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (TBC), and the TTF will explore the unique challenges of maintaining the appeal of the profession in emergency contexts. The session will include a short introduction of the current project being implemented by GEC in Ukraine, and programmes in crisis and emergency contexts to ensure that teachers in hardship situations can continue to teach through a suite of resources and approaches focused on digital, pedagogical, and socio-emotional skills. The roundtable will be followed by a discussion on the support teachers need to realize their commitment and their vocation in the most difficult contexts. 

 

Global pathways to an attractive teaching profession

A two-hour workshop co-convened by the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 (TTF) and Education International (TBC) will explore national and regional policy responses and programmes to improve the appeal of the teaching profession in response to the global shortage on teachers. There will be a plenary session with presentations by TTF members on initiatives and evidence on improving the attraction and retention of qualified and motivated teachers, followed by regional breakout sessions for participants (policy makers, teacher unions, TTF members, teachers) to explore localised challenges and responses in more depth.

High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession - 1st meeting

The High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession will convene for the first time on July 18, 2023. This inaugural meeting, one of five planned gatherings, will be closed to the general public and conducted online. 

The Panel, appointed in June 2023, is an initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General as follow-up to the Transforming Education Summit. Its mandate is to produce a set of evidence-informed recommendations on how to deliver on the commitment that every learner has a professionally trained, qualified, and well-supported teacher who can flourish in a transformed education system. The scope covers educators from early childhood through tertiary education, including technical and vocational education and training. The work of the Panel is being supported throughout by a joint UNESCO-ILO Secretariat. 

The Teacher Task Force will be represented at the High-level Panel by one of its co-Chairs, Ms Matsie Angelina Motshekga, Minister of Basic Education of South Africa.

The discussions of the Panel will focus on six imperatives for the future of the teaching profession: quality, equity, diversity and inclusion, humanity, sustainability, and dignity. These imperatives guide the Panel's efforts to shape an inclusive and forward-looking teaching profession that prioritizes the well-being of both teachers and learners.

The working methods are carefully designed to ensure a thorough and comprehensive approach. With co-chairs comprising former Heads of State and the participation of a variety of stakeholders, including youth, the Panel brings together diverse perspectives and experiences. It will also draw on consultations organized by the Secretariat, briefs to inform the Panel as well as existing relevant literature.

The Panel will both draw on and inform preparations for the forthcoming first global report on the teaching profession to be published by UNESCO and the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2023 in early 2024.

European Commission Regional Teachers' Initiative for Africa launch event

The Regional Teachers' Initiative for Africa is a European Commission flagship initiative that will invest EUR 100 million under the EU-Africa Global Gateway Investment Package in accelerating the training of new teachers for Sub-Saharan Africa and responding to its estimated need for 15 million new qualified teachers by 2030.

It brings together the European Union, the African Union, UNESCO, the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 and EU Member States to support African partner countries in their efforts to achieve a more competent, motivated and inclusive teacher workforce to increase the attractiveness of the teaching profession and, ultimately, to improve learning outcomes in basic education. 

The Regional Teachers’ Initiative will focus on making teaching both an attractive job prospect for promising young professionals and a life-long learning experience. It puts an emphasis on teachers in basic education acquiring and transmitting digital and green skills – skills that future-proof students for the world of tomorrow, enable them to plug into the opportunities of the digital transformation, and engage them in the preservation of our planet. The initiative will also cover teaching in crisis contexts.

Team Europe brings together four EU Member States agencies (from France, Germany, Belgium and Finland) to create a new Teacher Regional Facility. Through the Facility, the programme makes available funding, expertise, capacity building and tools to strengthen the teacher profession and improve teacher professional development, specifically in digital and green skills, as well as to build evidence and research capacity.

The programme’s actions will be implemented at the continental, sub-regional and multi-country levels, mostly in Sub-Saharan African countries and with some activities open to North African countries.
