CARICOM standards for the teaching profession: teachers, educational leaders and teacher educators

The CARICOM standards for the teaching profession is an aspirational collection of statements of performance and value expectations for members of the teaching profession in the CARICOM region. The document should be used as a guide for education systems to develop professional standards where none exist and where they do exist it is a reference framework that can be used to strengthen existing policies and procedures that govern assessing teaching quality.

The standards have three distinctive features: (i) the expectations for good teaching are aligned and mapped across the practices of classroom teachers, educational leaders and teacher educators, as quality teaching is deliberately nurtured and developed through the life of the career; (ii) there is an emphasis on developing a culture of research in teaching and, (iii) effective teaching and quality teacher development is characterised as a holistic practice attending to knowledge, skills, attitudes and wellbeing.
