Regional agenda: policies for excellence in teaching

This document was written based on the discussions that took place at the first meeting of the Latin American Coalition for Teaching Excellence in Buenos Aires on 7 and 8 February 2019, organized by the Inter-American Dialogue, the Varkey Foundation and Inicia Educación, with the support of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI).

The Latin American Coalition for Teaching Excellence aims to promote the professionalization of teaching so that all children and young people have the support and guidance of an excellent teacher. It brings together a mix of actors: representatives of civil society organizations; civil servants and former civil servants; ministers and former ministers; academics; teachers; and representatives of multilateral organizations, among others, from 12 Latin American countries, who are actively involved in education. The Coalition's proposals are centred around four areas in which it believes action is needed to achieve teacher excellence: initial training, school leadership, teachers’ professional development, and working conditions for teacher professionalization.
