Teachers in refugee and displacement settings: Policies, practices and pathways for improving teacher quality and workforce sustainability

Presentation by Dr. Mary Mendenhall, Associate Professor in the International and Comparative Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University, at the online event Teacher education in emergencies to support attraction and well-being to celebrate World Teachers' Day held on 6 October 2023. The session led by the Teacher Task Force explored the unique challenges of teaching and learning, strengthening the attractiveness of the teaching profession and retention of teachers in emergency contexts. It presented some examples of teachers’ professional development and digital tools to support the teaching process in emergencies, enhance attractiveness and ensure continuity of education and access to quality distance learning. Dr. Mendenhall presented insights on a study commissioned by UNHCR about Teachers in refugee and displacement settings: Policies, practices and pathways for improving teacher quality and workforce sustainability.
